Ceiling Panel Installation
DRYWALL
WASCO CEILING PANELS can be applied by several methods to drywall ceilings or walls. Perhaps the easiest method is to first attach luan paneling, (1/4" thick), over the desired area with either drywall nails, screws, or paneling nails. By doing this "pre-application", easy attachment of WASCO CEILING PANELS can be achieved at every 6" intervals, thus assuring proper nail penetration to a secure area beneath the panel itself by nailing.
We suggest that WASCO CEILING PANELS be attached with either 5/8" or 3/4" length wire nails, these are easily purchased from most hardware stores or home centers. WASCO CEILING PANELS are designed to be "slightly overlapped" by the installer, if overlapping is not desired for your particular installation, they may be edge joined one to another with good success as well.
NOTE: If joined edge to edge to one another, you might find it necessary to caulk between each joint to minimize gapping. You will need to use a good quality latex caulk, which will allow the panels to later be painted. If a seamless appearance is your desired goal, it will be necessary to caulk between the panels in this application, as well as in those being overlapped.
ANOTHER METHOD
Another method would be to use a lathing every 6" on centers both vertically then horizontally over the desired area prior to nailing WASCO CEILING PANELS to the surface. Lath boards would need to be at least 1/4" thick x 1 1/2" wide. After lathing is finished, WASCO CEILING PANELS can be nailed, (in the same manner listed above), to the lath boards.
PLASTER
Plaster can be a demanding compound to resurface, if the plaster area to be covered is cracked or pealing greater success can be assured by using the luan paneling "pre-application" method as listed above. (It will be more difficult to attach the Luan to the surface of the plaster than would be for a drywall ceiling or wall, consult your home center advisor for tips on fastening the luan plywood).
SECOND APPLICATION
A second method for application over plaster surfaces is to use a "base and cove adhesive" buttered on the backs of the panel itself. A good quality adhesive with high tack properties is necessary. Slight setting of the panel will be necessary with this type of application, (this is accomplished with a slight side to side twist while applying pressure). A damp cloth for clean up will be useful as well. This type of installation can be easier than the first, as no pre surfacing of the plaster will need to be done, and wire nails are omitted as well.
CERAMIC / CONCRETE
If the desired area to be covered has ceramic tiles, or is either actual concrete or green board, use the "base and cove adhesive" method of installation as explained under Plaster installation instructions.
WASCO MOLDING
Prior to beginning to applly the WASCO MOLDING, first decide if you want the molding to be joined edge to edge to one another, or slightly overlapping the ceiling panel. WASCO MOLDING can easily be attached with wire nails first at the cornerl, then every 6" from that point. Good success can be achieved also by edge butterings along the back edge where it will come into contact with the wall surface with base and cove adhesive. Clean up any squeeze-out with a damp cloth. Though it isn't necessary, quality latex caulk can be used along the top and bottom of the WASCO MOLDING as well as where adjoining pieces are placed. A level line is beneficial to place either above or directly below the WASCO MOLDING to ensure a quality installation.
SURFACE PREPARATION
Prior to painting your new WASCO CEILING PANELS and/or WASCO MOLDING, it will be necessary to prime these surfaces with a quality "bonding primer". One such primer is Zinser 1-2-3 primer. Once this is applied, any type of paint may be used. Depending on your personal preference you may choose to prime these prior to applying them to the wall or ceiling. If you choose to prime them after they are first installed, this can be easily done as well. Spread the primer thin to reduce brush strokes, (if using a brush), and to avoid "ponding" in recessed panel areas. One coat of primer is sufficient prior to painting.
PAINTING TECHNIQUES
After priming the WASCO CEILING PANEL and/or WASCO MOLDING, you may choose to paint them with one color. You will notice that it will be necessary to "slightly" second coat them in some areas. Other customers as well as WASCO INC. have used up to three colors. This can be easily done with enormous success.
• First apply the darkest of the three colors over the primed and dried panel.
• Next, use the middle tone color in a dry brush method, (this is done by dipping only the tips of the paint brush into the paint and then tapping on a piece of newspaper to remove any blotchiness that could occur otherwise. Lightly stroke the panel in various directions, hitting only the raised panel areas. This will cause a striking visual effect. The more you lightly brush over the raised areas, the more pronounced the pattern on the panel will become.
• Lastly, the lightest color is dry brushed in a "hit or miss" method over the panel, creating depth and highlight as well. If you are interested in this type of painting technique, you can practice on one of your panels prior to commiting to an entire area. For interest, a silver or gold color can be slightly highlighted over the panel.
• CAUTION: Use very little of either of these colors, as the pigment in these paints covers a lot of area. Once painted in this manner, it is impossible for any one to tell that these panels are not tin. These panels will also take on the appearance of age once treated with this painting technique.
